About this document

Interpretation of Statutes, Vepa P. Sarathi, PG 239-240: N.K Jain V C.K Shah AIR 1991 1sc 1289 by Tarique Aziz is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The Supreme Court held that the intention of the legislature must be found in the words used in the statute itself. If the words are clear and unambiguous, then the intention of the legislature is also clear. The court should not go outside the statute to collect the intention of the legislature and impose something which the legislature did not intend. The court should interpret the law as it stands and avoid giving its own interpretation.
