728,000,000 (48•6%) are covered by eradication programmes and 306,000,000 live in areas which are progressing by stages, in the preparatory phase or where there are preeradication programmes and pilot projects. This leaves 125,000,000 or 8•3% of the world population who are still living in countries that as yet have no plans for the eradication of malaria. Present estimates of the cost of malaria eradication from 1963 onwards to the end of operations amount to $1,806,000,000. These estimates are mainly based on operations up to the year 1968 and in some cases beyond (Pakistan, for example), but do not include operations in Africa south of the Sahara beyond 1968. Large scale operations will probably still be necessary there beyond that date.
