What is Standard Uptake Value (SUV) Measurement from CT/PET Scans following Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy Correlates with the Biologically Equivalent Dose (BED) Delivered about?

Purpose/Objective(s): Radiation Oncology Informatics solutions range in complexity from simple Biologically Equivalent Dose (BED) Calculators to the highly complicated Treatment Planning Systems. Software vendors tend to provide de-novo solutions that lack interoperability. Such solutions would result in a poor use of the recently allotted Health Information Technology Budget ($19 Billion). We hypothesized that leveraging existing web based services to develop and deploy informatics solutions would result in a more efficient use of resources. We evaluated the free web-based IGoogle service in regards to the feasibility of this approach by developing two gadgets: a BED calculator and a Journal Reader/Aggregator. Materials/Methods: The gadgets were programmed in Javascript using the freely available IGoogle Developer's Guide and the Gadget Application Programming Interface (API). The linear-quadratic formula for the BED calculator was obtained from Eric J Hall's "Radiobiology for the Radiologist" and the gadget was tested with known values from the text. The JQuery AJAX Library was used to extract the table of contents (TOC) from journal websites after fetching their HTML content via
