What is When Memory Becomes a Prosthesis about?
This book is the result of a conference series in Helsinki, organized by the Foundation for Research in Effective History (www.svst.eu), partly in collaboration with the French Embassy and the Swiss Embassy in Helsinki, with the Niilo Helander foundation, the Aue Foundation, the Historical Association in Finland and the Centre for Historical Ontology (www.c-h-o.eu). The general topic was the same as in the present book title, that is, To Understand What is Happening. This perspective stresses a certain priority of the historical process, with narrative and other interpretations as different responses. Three sub-areas figure in the contributions: The Historicity of Understanding, The Limits of Making and The Future of Memory. The conferences in Helsinki were in English, German and French, but it was decided to publish the texts in English only. For the translations the gratitude goes to Lassi Jakola, Carl O'Brien, Kaisa Sivenius and Fredrik Westerlund.
