The Parthenon was an ancient temple built in Athens in the 5th century BC dedicated to the goddess Athena. It served as both a treasury housing a large statue of Athena and also as a Christian church and Islamic mosque later on. In the 1600s, damage was caused by an ammunition dump explosion inside the building. The architects designed the exterior with careful geometry and proportions to effortlessly prepare viewers for the beautiful interior statue of Athena.
