What is Understanding Back EMF in DC Motors about?
When a conductor rotates in a magnetic field, an induced electromotive force (emf) is generated called back emf. The back emf opposes the applied voltage and its magnitude increases with speed. The presence of back emf makes the DC motor self-regulating as it draws only as much current as needed to develop the required torque based on the load. When load increases, speed and back emf decrease causing current to increase and develop more torque until steady conditions are reached matching load torque.
