What is Corrosion of Stainless Steel and Nickel Alloys in a Eutectic Carbonate Salt Under Argon and Co2 about?

Corrosion performance of stainless steels 316L and 347H, and nickel alloys 625 and 800H were investigated in molten sodium carbonate/potassium carbonate eutectic salt, which is a promising phase change material for use in thermal energy storage applications, at 750 °C under argon and CO 2 atmospheres. Comparative thickness loss measurements and analyses of corrosion products were performed, using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques on the surfaces of the studied metal alloys. In general, the corrosion mechanism was found to be heavily influenced by the decomposition of the carbonate salt and the presence of oxidants, which can evolve from the salt's decomposition. Our results confirmed that the use of CO 2 as a cover gas can significantly reduce the corrosion damage by inhibiting the decomposition of the salt, which in turn reduces the salt basicity and impedes the formation of oxidizing ions. The highest corrosion rates were observed for alloys 347H and 625 corroded under Ar, at 6.2 and 10 mm/year respectively. The corrosion rate for alloy 625 was reduced to 1.1 mm/year under CO 2 . Alloy 800H showed the lowest corrosion damage in both atmosp
