## I n t r o d u c t i o n Over the past decade, many U.S. colleges and universities have un dertaken a number of strategies designed to meet institutional needs for flexibility in faculty staffing. One popular strategy at colleges and uni versities with tenure systems is employing faculty in full-time non-ten ure-track appointments (El-Khawas 1990; AAUP 1986 AAUP , 1978)). Eightysix percent of the institutions responding to the 1990 Campus Trends survey reported that they had made term or contract appointments (non tenure-track) of full-time faculty as compared with 77 percent of the institutions reporting such types of appointments two years earlier (El-Khawas 1990, 19; 1988, 23). Robert Blackburn and Neil Wiley (1990) found that about 30 percent of the total faculty at a select group of private liberal arts colleges were not tenure eligible. Figures derived from the U.S. Department of Education's National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty showed an estimated 10 percent of all full-time faculty not on the tenure track (National Center 1990).
