What is Discovery of Buckminsterfullerene C60 about?

Kroto, Smalley, and Curl discovered a new allotrope of carbon in 1985 called buckminsterfullerene or buckyballs. Buckyballs are made of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow spherical structure resembling a soccer ball, with 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. This discovery ignited excitement as it was a new form of elemental carbon and opened up research into fullerenes and nanotechnology. Kroto, Smalley, and Curl were awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of buckyballs.
