What is Anatomy of the Temporomandibular Joint about?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a synovial condylar joint with an articular disc that divides it into two cavities, involving the head of the mandible and parts of the temporal bone. It is supplied by branches of the mandibular nerve and blood from the superficial temporal and maxillary arteries, and is supported by several ligaments. The joint allows various movements including protraction, retraction, side-to-side movement, elevation, and depression, facilitated by different muscles of mastication.
