What is Extraction of Structural Information from Grey Pictures about?

It iS one of the most important problems in image processing to extract from given picture the information describing its fundamental structure and to generate a description of the picture. A few reports on detection of surfacespecific points h'om digitized terrain elevation data, which were recently published [1-3], ~md or, hers on theoretic'd analysis of the structure of image [-4, 5], seem to suggest one possible approach to this problem. The latter two papers, however, emphasize the analysis of continuous images, This paper reports an attempt to develop a system which extracts structural information fl'om "~ digitized grey picture. Structm'al information considered here consists of a :few kinds of feature regions and feature lines of a surface on the two-dimensional phme such as peak regions, pit, regions, pass regions, rhtge lines, and ravine lines. Important differences among the methods in previous reports [I-3\_-] "rod the present approach are as follows. First, two local features~..conl~ectivity number (CN) and coefficient of cnrw~ture (CC)---are adopted for ch~ssifica/,ion of picture elements. These were originally defined for binary pictures in [-6~, and then extended to
