When the plate voltage of a gas-filled diode reaches a critical voltage of around 15V, the gas inside becomes ionized and the plate current increases sharply. Before this point, the tube behaves like a vacuum diode with very low current. Once ionized, further increases to the plate voltage cause the plate current to rise accordingly, while the voltage drop across the tube remains constant at 15V.
