Plate armour became more common and cheaper than mail armour in Europe between the 13th to 18th centuries due to larger furnaces and lower labor costs after the Black Death. Full suits of plate armour emerged in the 15th century, providing knights with full body protection on the battlefield. Firearms initially did not make plate armour obsolete, as it could stop bullets from modest distances, but thicker and heavier late 16th century armour was needed to resist more advanced weapons.
