In 1973 we decided to offer a course on data bases to our final-year honours students in computing science. The duration of this course was to be 24 lecture hours, and we felt that it was more important for the students to develop the basic understanding of Data Base Systems (DBSs) in general rather than to be tied down to the narrow confines of a particular package.This book is intended as a text on the subject consistent with the course objectives. Each topic in the book is developed from an elementary level within the understanding of readers with only a basic knowledge of data processing. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. In chapter 1, the evolution of data bases is traced and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Data and more traditional file structures along with pointer organisations are reviewed in chapter 2 to provide the necessary background information for the appreciation of data bases. The issues and problems of DBSs are discussed in chapters 3 and 4.
