What is Diary of a Rape Victim : Breaking the Silence to Break Free about?
In 1961 seventeen-year-old Phillis Van Godwin was dragged from a car and brutally raped. Almost forty years later she is still dealing with the aftereffects of that savage attack. In "Diary Of A Rape Victim - Breaking the Silence to Break Free" Phillis shares her most private thoughts and feelings in the hopes of helping others. In the form of diary entries, Phillis offers us glimpses of a young woman suffering in silence. Not receiving the emotional support she so desperately needed from her parents, Phillis had to shoulder the entire burden of her pain, grief and fear. Not only does Phillis have to work through her own feelings of shame, but also deal with the sexist and chauvinistic attitudes of others in the 1960's. It has taken a lot of tears and years, but Phillis is no longer suffering in silence, she's breaking the silence to start breaking free, and putting the shattered pieces of her life back together. She is no longer a victim, but a survivor.
