What is Effect of purity on the tensile properties of tungsten single crystals from −196°C to 29°C about?

The effect of purity on the tensile properties of tungsten single crystals grown by electron-bombardment zone-melting was investigated from -196°C to 29°C. An increase in the overall purity of the crystals by increasing from one to five zone-melting passes decreases the critical resolved shear stress by approximately 40,000 psi at -196"C, increases the ductility, and facilitates deformation twinning. Furthermore, the dependence of twinning on test temperature is unusual in that twinning in the highpurity crystals occurs readily at temperatures from -95°C to -l'iS"C, but not at -196°C. The amounts of interstitial impurities in solid solution in crystals of different purity levels are estimated from electrical resistivity measurements and are found to be only a few atom p.p.m. These estimates are used to calculate the magnitude of strengthening by interstitial impurities in solid solution as predicted by various theories. The calculated values of strengthening are at least one order of magnitude lower than those observed experimentally. Therefore, the large amount of strengthening by trace impurities observed in the present experiment can not be explained by the current theories of s
