## Abstract This book explores the impact of demographic change on economic growth and poverty in developing countries. The papers in this volume present some new themes and reinforce others. It is shown that rapid population growth had a quantitatively negative impact on the pace of aggregate economic growth in developing countries. Rapid fertility decline made a relevant contribution to reducing the incidence and severity of poverty. The impact of rapid demographic change on the rural environment and development was mixed — a minor player against the larger picture of initial conditions and broad policy effects.
