There are 113 endangered animal species in Macedonia, including 30 fish species, 1 reptile, 66 birds, and 16 mammals. Some of the most endangered species are the Balkan lynx, brown bear, and wolf. The Balkan lynx population is estimated at only 35-40 individuals located primarily in Mavrovo National Park. The brown bear population is nearly extinct with approximately 250 remaining mostly in the western part of Macedonia. Around 700 wolves remain living in mountainous, hilly, and plain areas.
