1) A mild and efficient method is described for converting methyl or ethyl esters into tert-butyl esters using potassium tert-butoxide in diethyl ether. 2) The reactions proceed rapidly at 0-20°C to give good yields of tert-butyl ester products. 3) The method was tested on a number of aliphatic and aromatic ester examples to give isolated tert-butyl ester products in over 98% purity and yield without optimization.
