A slave named Androcles escapes into the woods to flee from his master and wanders for a long time, exhausted and hungry. He comes across a lion with a large thorn embedded in its paw, causing it great pain. Taking pity, Androcles removes the thorn, relieving the lion. Rather than attacking, the lion becomes grateful to Androcles and brings him food. Androcles is later captured and sentenced to death by being thrown to the lions. When placed in the arena, the lion he helped recognizes Androcles and refuses
