Blood Falls is an outflow of iron oxide-tainted saltwater from beneath the Taylor Glacier in Antarctica that emerges as a reddish cascade. The source is a subglacial pool several kilometers inland that is overlain by 400 meters of ice. The feature was discovered in 1911 and first thought to be caused by algae, but is actually due to iron oxides in the salty water.
