South Korean culture is centered around traditions from the Joseon Dynasty. Koreans take pride in their native language of Korean and their unique alphabet Hangeul. The national symbol of South Korea is the Taegukgi flag which represents the balance of yin and yang. Staple foods include kimchi, a spicy fermented cabbage dish consumed daily, and ceremonial foods are offered to honor ancestors on occasions like birthdays. South Korea has transformed from an agrarian to industrialized economy since the 1960s.
