Vamana was an 8th century Indian scholar who was the chief exponent of the Riti school of poetics. [1] He argued that Riti, meaning style or mode of expression, constitutes the soul of poetry. [2] According to Vamana, it is the special arrangement of words and use of literary devices that enhances the beauty of a poem and makes the poetry soulful. [3] He initiated speculation about the soul of poetry and declared that Riti is the soul of poetry.
