What is 212: QUANTIFICATION OF LEFT VENTRICULAR MASS CHANGE IN CRITICAL ILLNESS about?

Learning Objectives: In adult patients receiving heparin on ECMO support, the approach to monitoring anticoagulation remains controversial. Recently, pediatric ECMO literature has demonstrated anti-Xa to be the strongest correlator with therapeutic heparin dose; however, this is not confirmed in the adult population. The objective of this study was to compare the correlation between anti-Xa and aPTT with heparin dose and to describe bleeding and thrombotic complications in adult patients receiving ECMO support. Methods: This is a 2-year retrospective review of 18 patients on veno-venous (VV) or veno-arterial (VA) ECMO who received heparin for systemic anticoagulation with anti-Xa and/or aPTT monitoring. Patients were excluded if supported on ECMO for less than 24 hours. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the heparin dose and coagulation test results to determine the strength of correlation. Strong, moderate, and weak correlations were defined by r-values of > 0.6, 0.4-0.6, and < 0.4, respectively. Results: The population was primarily male (72%) on VV support (56%) with a median age of 58 years and SOFA score of 10 at the time of cannulation. There were 151 an
