presented in the above conference held from September 13th to 17th in 2004 at Osaka, Japan. It was the third time that the Pittsburgh Coal Conference was held outside the USA. Members of the Japanese Organizing committee proposed to publish a special issue of Fuel in order to raise current topics in coal utilization fields. During the 3-day period, 235 oral and 73 poster presentations took place in 19 research topics. Among these research topics, the following three topics were selected to be published in this special issue: (1) Gasification and Pyrolysis Technology; (2) Hydrogen in the Future; (3) Environmental Control Technologies for SO x , NO x , Particulates and Trace Elements. These topics are key technologies for efficient and pollutionfree utilization of large-scale coal, since IGCC or IGFC seem to be the most efficient conversion technologies using coal. Pollutants such as NO x , SO x occurring as a result of coal combustion are almost controlled by catalytic selective reduction with ammonia and wet desulfurization technology, respectively. Control technologies of environments, above all of particulate matters, and analyses of accurate methodology of trace elements are cur
