What is Configuring Gender : Explorations in Theory and Politics about?

Terra Incognita as a series seeks to open a "thinking space" between the abandonment of politics often associated with postmodernism and the unreconstructed faith in politics which has characterized many modern emancipatory projects. Both of these positions function as grand narratives which circumscribe both theoretical and practical possibilities. In doing so, they have discouraged the thinking through of uncertainty. Encompassing a range of theoretical and disciplinary approaches, the studies in Terra Incognita attempt to disrupt this opposition, expressing resistance, not only to "grand narratives," but to any abstractions or conceptual frames which enact closure. The series probes how Western societies reconfigure themselves in currents flowing within and beyond their borders. Of particular interest are the theatres of struggle involving relationships with indigenous peoples, equality-seeking movements and statefragmenting nationalist movements.
