This report contains data from "The Condition of Education 1996" on issues that are central to the process of work preparation: course-taking patterns among high school and postsecondary students, student experience as it relates to preparation for entry into the labor force, and adult involvement in education and training while employed. Some of the findings are as follows: (1) high school graduates in 1994 took a much higher percentage of courses in academic core subjects than did graduates in 1982; (2) high school students' access to and use of computers increased substantially between 1984 and 1993; (3) proficiency levels of 17-year-olds have improved in mathematics and science since the late 1970s; (4) increasing proportions of high school graduates are entering postsecondary education immediately after high school; (5) postsecondary subbaccalaureate degree majors vary considerably by sex and race-ethnicity; (6) at the baccalaureate level, students are more likely to major in applied fields of study, rather than more general, liberal arts education; (7) nearly 30 percent of high school students work at least part time; (8) almost half of full-time and 85 percent of part-time
