What is Carrefour about?
Carrefour entered the Russian retail market in 2007 with plans to become one of the top three players. It opened its first hypermarket in Moscow in June 2009. However, just four months later in October 2009, Carrefour announced it would exit Russia due to a lack of opportunities for strong growth and leadership position in the short to medium term. Carrefour cited its strategy of only operating in markets where it could achieve a top three leadership role as the reason for pulling out of Russia.
