Human embryonic kidney cells were transformed by exposure to sheared fragments of adenovirus type 5 DNA. The transformed cells, called 293 cells, exhibited characteristics of transformation and analyzed further. Analysis showed the 293 cells had a variable pattern of protein synthesis and lacked a surface protein compared to other human cells. Hybridization of cellular RNA with adenovirus DNA fragments indicated transcription of part of the adenovirus genome.
