When Dickens was forty-six years old the desire of his early days to become an actor achieved reality. Unhappy at being parted from his wife, he was in need of some excitement and the stimulus of a visible audience. So the last twelve years of his life were spent mainly in railway trains, hurrying from town to town to give brilliant readings from his works. This tells of the popularity and vicissitudes of the tours undertaken by the greatest literary genius of his age. Right through Britain and America Dickens drew thousands who clamoured to see and hear him until, worn out by his exertions, ill-health overtook him and he was forced to give up. Three months later he died. Raymund Fitzsimons has already written two successful books about Victorian showmen: one, 'The Baron of Piccadilly', was about Albert Smith and the other, 'Barnum in London', told the story of the American showman and his dwarf Tom Thumb. It was from Smith that Dickens learned the technique of holding audiences, as indeed Barnum had been Smith's mentor.
