What is Editorial about?

Engineered geothermal systems such as HDR (Hot Dry Rock), because of the size of the resources involved and the environmental bene®ts they oer, could become one of the major sources of energy for the 21st century. Since the ®rst HDR project at Fenton Hill in the 1970s, signi®cant advances have been made in the creation and operation of a stimulated reservoir, and several large projects are now under way in various parts of the world, directed at establishing the technology for developing engineered geothermal systems for commercial use. Establishment of this technology will require not only advances in the scienti®c and engineering ®elds, but also the integration of both. After the ®rst phase of the Los Alamos project in the 1970s, a number of largescale ®eld trials on circulation were carried out in the U.S.A., U.K., France and Japan. In 1982, a comprehensive academic review of HDR technology formed part of the First Japan-United States Joint Seminar on Hydraulic Fracturing and Geothermal Energy. In this meeting, scientists from the U.S.A. and Japan, and from Europe, discussed the problems that occur in hydraulic fracturing and geothermal energy extraction processes from the scien
