What is Queen of Navarre: Jeanne d'Albret, 1528 - 1572 about?

The sources on Jeanne d'Albret are widely scattered in France and there is also considerable documentation in London and Geneva. Several summers of research were therefore required to assemble the materials for a full-scale biography. A grant from the American Philosophical Society in i960 enabled me to make the preliminary forays and to plan the amount of time necessary in each place. The research was completed and the first draft written in 1965-66, thanks to a Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. At each stage I benefited from the assistance of many persons and institutions. Space forbids mention of each debt owed to the staffs of the Houghton Library at Harvard, the Bibliothèque Nationale and Archives Nationales in Paris, the Archives Départementales des Basses-Pyrénées in Pau, and de l'Orme in Alençon, the Bibliothèque de la Faculté des Lettres at the University of Bordeaux, the British Museum and the Public Records Office in London, the Bibliothèque Municipale in La Rochelle and the Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire and the Musée Historique de la Réformation in Geneva, all of whom assisted me to locate and decipher the sources.
