Sri Lanka has a long history dating back 125,000 years to the Stone Age. The earliest inhabitants were the Veddah people. Sri Lanka developed a sophisticated civilization with irrigation systems and was an important trade hub. It had periods of rule by local kings as well as South Indian and colonial rulers. Major historic periods include the Anuradhapura kingdom, the Polonnaruwa kingdom, colonial rule by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and independence in 1948.
