The historical evolution of vortex-lattice methods began in the early 20th century with work on potential flow and lifting line theories. Richardsons work on numerical solutions to partial differential equations laid the foundation. Early computational fluid dynamics work included Thom, Prandtl, and Liepmann. The 1/4-3/4 chord rule was developed in 1937 and proved useful for vortex-lattice solutions. Work in the 1940s-1960s further advanced computational fluid dynamics and vortex-lattice methods.
