The two factions of the Katipunan, the Magdiwang and Magdalo, disagreed over leadership after their victory against Spanish rule. Each faction wanted to control different provinces in Cavite and Batangas. Their disputes weakened their position against a counteroffensive by the Spanish general Polavieja. A meeting was called between the factions to resolve their differences, but disagreements arose over the symbols of the new republic and who should hold leadership positions, nearly leading to violence.
