Egypt has significant resources of black shale in the Safaga-Qusier area in the Eastern Desert and Abu Tartur area in the Western Desert. Studies have found that the black shales in Quseir-Safaga contain up to 40 gallons of oil per ton and could contain over 4.5 billion barrels of extractable oil.
