Acoustic emission method was used to investigate subcritical crack growth i n heat treated (oil quench from 1200°C. 2 h annealing at 200°C) console specimens Of steel 40Kh. The crack growth was observed through a microscope and with acoustic emission registration. The acoustic emission method permitted determination of the moment that crack initiating movement, which was not detected visually, was detected with great precision. The crack growth rate relation t o time during static loading, practically coinciding with the intensity character of the acoustic emissions, indicated the presence of area with lower crack propagation rates.-A.R.S.
