French painter Paul Gauguin spent his early years in Peru before moving to France, where he had a successful career as a stockbroker until taking up painting full-time in his late 30s. Obsessed with primitive cultures, he moved to Tahiti in 1891 seeking artistic freedom through immersion in a "virgin nature" environment. Though his exhibitions in Europe were not well-received, he produced many iconic post-impressionist works in Polynesia depicting native life before dying of illness in the Marquesas Islands
