What is Samuel Phelps and Sadler's Wells Theatre by Shirley S. Allen about?
This book is an attempt to reverse the verdict of history on the merits and accomplishments of Samuel Phelps, an English actor and theatrical manager of the nineteenth century. In his own time critics ranked him with Garrick, Kemble, Kean, and Macready. His management of Sadler's Wells Theatre was one of the few successful managements of the Victorian period, surviving the years of economic depression known as the "hungry 'forties" and flourishing during two decades that saw the virtual disappearance of English drama from London theatres. The success of Phelp's management, from 1844 until 1862, demonstrated for the first time that the classical repertory of the English stage could attract and hold a popular audience
