Graham Nerlich studied philosophy and English literature at the University of Adelaide, gaining a BA (with joint Honours) in 1954 and an MA (1955). These were halcyon days for philosophy in Adelaide, following the appointment of Jack Smart to the Hughes Chair in 1950 and the subsequent arrival of Charlie Martin. Doubtless due to Jack and Charlie's influence, the Adelaide students around this time were a brilliant crowd: Brian Ellis, Brian Medlin, Michael Bradley, Max Deutscher, Ian Hinkfuss and many another. Most of these students went to Oxford afterwards, and thence eventually to professorships in Australia. This cemented Australia's reputation in philosophy: you went to Adelaide (or somewhere), then Oxford, then wound up back in Oz where someone offered you a chair. It isn't over yet.Graham too followed this path, studying for the BPhil at Oxford from 1956-58. Graham's MA had been awarded for a thesis on Wittgenstein's theory of meaning in the Tractatus, and the topic of his BPhil, supervised by the great J L Austin, approached the topic of personal identity through the lens of the philosophy of language.
