Scabies is an infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It affects 300 million people worldwide each year. Symptoms include burrows in the skin and itchy rashes. Diagnosis is usually made clinically by finding burrows but can be confirmed microscopically by finding mites, eggs or feces in skin scrapings. Treatment involves topical scabicides and oral antihistamines and antibiotics if there is a secondary infection.
