This study examined the effects of induced oral respiration through nasal obstruction on primate facial development and dentition. Rhesus monkeys had their nasal passages blocked with silicone plugs, forcing oral breathing. Records were taken to analyze changes. The experimental monkeys adapted differently to oral breathing, but generally kept their mouths open. Over time, they developed facial appearances and dental occlusions different from controls.
