What is No Room for Scientific Dishonesty or Misconduct about?
No Room for Scientific Dishonesty or Misconduct References ## EDITORIAL A recent issue of the weekly journal Science I describes the latest instance, in the USA, of deliberately fraudulent results incorporated into scientific publications. These were co-authored by a highly placed, distinguished and reputable scientist. Their discovery necessitates the retraction (in whole or in part) of five papers published in 1995 and 1996. This particular case arose from a graduate student and was detected by a meticulous reviewer who took his (her) role seriously in the assessment of a paper submitted for publication. Something odd about one of the illustrations submitted concerned this reviewer. When the senior author was alerted to the situation, he and a colleague spent two weeks checking every detail of the work that had been performed by the junior author. This uncovered the mechanism of the fraud and other instances of similar behaviour by the same graduate student. How the situation was handled is well described and constitutes an exemplary model for dealing with such cases. The actual consequences for the perpetrator (who, when challenged by the evidence, confessed) were not disclosed.
