This is a very large tome, almost 900 pages, in A4 format, hardcover, 5.5 cm thick, and weighing nearly 4 kg. The book provides the full, final publication of the investigations of a fifth-and sixth-century CE fort at Dichin, a site on the south bank of the Rositsa River, in the Late Antique province of Moesia II, ca. 50 km south of the Danube River, in Bulgaria. The excavations and other explorations, between 1996 and 2002, were carried out by a British and Bulgarian team and were directed by Andrew Poulter, who is the primary author and editor of this work and, for five chapters, the translator from Bulgarian. The publication is a remarkable achievement, for which Poulter and the numerous other contributors must be congratulated. The project at Dichin was a consequence of Poulter's earlier project at Nicopolis ad Istrum, about 11 km to the east and also on the Rositsa River. Survey in the hinterland of that city was carried out to determine the reasons for the changes in its form and economy between the Roman and Late Antique periods and to explore how agricultural production continued in the region after the destruction of the Roman villa economy in the later fourth century CE.
