The Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University possesses a small antique cast metal head, a fragment of a statue representing a young "Apollo" with two side-locks, which is still unpublished although it arrived there in I93I. It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to the piece since it forms part of a well-known series of statues and is an example of casting in a relatively rare sculptural medium. The statue's exact provenance is unknown. It was purchased from an unidentified source at some indefinite time (in the late nineteenth century?) by L.H. Moyes of I55 Fulham Road, S.W., London; and Dr. Denham Ross obtained it from Moyes through Mrs. Lewis Hind, a dealer of the "Vinehouse" in London. In 1931 the piece came as a gift from Dr. Ross to the Fogg and Harvard.' A rapid examination shows a bronze-brass to be the material of the head, red-brown in color and with a few golden flecks on the chest.2 As preserved, the fragment is 18.4 cm. high, the head 8.8 cm. high, shoulders 15.5 cm. wide; the total height of the entire figure must have been about 58 cm., or one-third life size.
