What is Image Challenge in Veterinary Pathology , Answers: Canine Diseases about?
An aural cholesteatoma, more appropriately named tympanokeratoma, is a keratin cyst of the middle ear reported in several species, including dogs, humans, and Mongolian gerbils. The cyst lining consists of stratified squamous keratinizing epithelium with central accumulation of keratin. Figure shows abundant keratin (\*) and fibrous thickening of the mucoperiosteum (mp) of the tympanic bulla (t); also visible are external ear canal (e), cochlea (c), middle ear compartment (m), and incus (i). Tympanokeratomas in dogs are most often associated with chronic otitis media and presumably develop secondary to chronic otitis and tympanic membrane retraction. Once a tympanokeratoma is formed, it can expand, destroy the bone tissue of the middle ear, and lead to neurological abnormalities. Chronic otitis media, secondary otitis interna, and neurologic signs were present in this case.
