What is Portugal about?
The army rebels seized control of Portugal in a nearly bloodless coup on April 25, 1974, ending nearly 50 years of dictatorship. By sunrise, the rebel group Movement of the Armed Forces (MFA) was in control of the country. The MFA promised to restore civil liberties and hold elections for a new government. The coup leader, General Antonio de Spinola, received the surrender of the outgoing Prime Minister and called for democratic reforms.
