Kenneth Doyle says that his approach `might qualify as something new' because he has attempted to combine `selected aspects of history of law, religion, and philosophy into a coherent framework' with a synthesis of neurophysiology, psychometrics, and psychoanalysis in order to study the meanings of money and property (p. 123). I had been looking forward to reading this book. Money is a complex phenomenon and needs the insights from a variety of disciplines. Sadly, though, I doubt this book will further our understanding of these important issues. One of the reasons for this scepticism is that I am not persuaded by the evolutionary story on which so much of his thesis depends. Doyle opts for the `out of Africa' side of the debate about human evolution, but argues that early man evolved into four distinct strains of Homo sapiens sapiens with speci®c types of temperament that persist to this day. The four types of humanity are identi®ed as African, Asian, European, and American Indian, and their respective temperaments are labelled as Expressive, Analytic, Driver, and Amiable.
