This dissertation examines representations of women in medieval Arabic popular epics (sīrah shaʿbīyah). It consolidates the known corpus of these epics in order to analyze the roles and power of female characters. Using feminist theory, it categorizes expressions of power as "power-over," "power-to," and "power-with," showing how women are judged based on which category their actions fit into.
