Computed tomography with contrast provides excellent anatomic resolution for the diagnosis of sialolithiasis and infectious or inflammatory disorders. MRI with contrast is needed to distinguish cystic from solid T2 hyperintense masses. Although some neoplasms have distinctive imaging features, imaging is not usually reliable to provide a specific histopathologic diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, and biopsy is usually required. Certain imaging features may be useful to suggest a mass is more likely benign or low-grade malignant versus a high-grade malignancy.
